Apply for Defensible Space Cost Share Funding*

*DFSC has temporarily closed the applications for the Partners in Wildfire Prevention fuel reduction grant. No new applications can be submitted at this time. This temporary closure is aimed at allowing our team to support our existing applicants and to digitize the application process. Our goal is to ensure that each application receives the attention and consideration it deserves. Please check back for updates. Contact Joelle Fraser joelle@diablofiresafe.org with any questions or concerns.

DFSC supports a wide variety of efforts to prepare for wildfires by securing and providing funds for proven risk reduction measures.

From thinning dead trees to clearing roadways, getting fire safe often requires hiring professional services. This work may be eligible for up to $5,000 in cost-sharing assistance.

When you can’t do it all yourself, DFSC may be able to help you get the funds you need. We review applications on a quarterly basis and welcome the opportunity to help.

Make Your Home Fire Safe

We are here to help you create defensible space around your home.

Whether you need assistance coordinating with local fire departments, hiring contractors, managing large projects, or even guidance for which trees to plant — DFSC is here to help you harden your home against wildfire.

Start with our tips to get started on your own and contact us when you have a project you need help with.

Get Firewise®

  • Recognition by the NFPA as a Firewise community means that you and your neighbors have coordinated your efforts to use best practices and proven methods to mitigate fire risk and protect your community in the event of wildfire.

  • There may be insurance and tax benefits, now or in the future. Contact your insurance company and local agencies to find out more.

A coordinated volunteer effort is not only more effective at mitigating the risks of wildfire, it also builds faith and confidence in one another. as a community.

Perhaps most importantly, resilience during and after disaster depends greatly on community commitment, communication, and common interest.

  • In addition to guidance for home hardening and community fire mitigation, the NFPA also offers continuing education and certification in wildfire mitigation.

The Firewise USA® recognition program provides a collaborative framework to help neighbors get organized, find direction, and take action to protect their homes and reduce wildfire risks in their community.

CAL FIRE assists local communities in receiving this designation, and the we can often secure funding to support the preparedness and risk mitigation required to meet Firewise standards.

Red Flag Program

Our Red Flag program is one of the most effective ways to alert communities when the risk of fire is high. Volunteers and partners distribute and display fire weather warning flags in highly visible locations.

We are looking forward to increased participation from more Fire Departments and Districts as this program expands. Let us know if your department or district is ready to join the effort!

This program has designed and provided 200 flags to the following fire departments throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties:

We thank our partners CAL FIRE, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, and the Hills Emergency Forum (HEF). Much appreciation also goes to the Laguna FireSafe Council for their guidance. Funding was provided by a National Fire Plan grant from the Bureau of Land Management through the California Fire Safe Council.
